First off, thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit about me and the change I hope to bring to this community.
My name is Amanda Jamrok and I am a 25 year old resident of Galveston Island. I was born and raised in the suburbs of Northwest Houston and made the move to the island in January of 2017. I could not be happier with where I now reside. The history, culture and atmosphere Galveston carries has always been near and dear to my heart. Spring is where I was raised; Galveston is my home.
I spent many years learning the coffee industry and culture before accepting a job in 2015 with a company contracted out of a large hospital to design their first coffee shop. I can honestly say that it has been a dream come true and the hospital staff I work alongside of are truly phenomenal. I have the greatest respect for nurses, doctors, and general hospital staff who make the world go round.
Outside of work, I love to travel. I’ve spent the better part of my adult years visiting various states and cities in the US and have made some wonderful friends around the country. The majority of my most recent travels include visiting cities with a Major League Soccer team. I am a proud Houston Dynamo season ticket holder and a lifelong soccer fan. Forever Orange!
Most of my free time is taken up by my foster animals. I work with an amazing rescue out of Houston called Rescued Pets Movement (RPM.) In the last 3-4 years, RPM has saved over 25,000 lives and has had a huge positive impact on the community and the high kill shelters in Houston. In total, my mom and I have helped saved over 100 of those 25k dogs, cats and even pigs! It is truly the most rewarding experience and I cannot recommend them enough.
I decided to run for office because I have been paying attention. I have watched elected Texas Representatives like Rick Perry, Ted Cruz, Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton and many others disgrace and bring shame to the state I love. I have watched in awe as these men have pushed through blatantly discriminatory, destructive and distracting agendas to keep Texans blind to what is really happening. Their plan hasn’t worked. Many Texans are outraged by the political pandering and reckless spending by the current Texas administration and we have had enough. It is time to bring sanity, decency, and most importantly, common sense back to Texas.
As a young Texan, it is plain to see that myself and others categorized as “millennials,” are severely underrepresented in our national government, and especially Texas. There are currently ZERO House or Congressional Representatives in Texas under the age of 30. In the same respect, only 20.4% of the Texas legislature is made up of women. In the current political climate and with rampant sexual harassment and misconduct allegations from elected officials coming to light, it comes as no surprise to me that women choose to stay out of the political arena.
Sexist remarks and sexual harassment/abuse is something the majority of the female population has to deal with. I understand the severity and know that we cannot move forward and begin to change the attitude surrounding these inexcusable actions until we call out sexism and harassment when we see it, even in our personal circle of friends and family.
I hope my first post has given you a bit of insight into who I am, not only as a candidate, but as a Texan and Galvestonian. I look forward to meeting many of you as I officially kick off my campaign in 2018. Please feel free to contact me should you have concerns or questions about where I stand on issues I have yet to mention.
I’ll leave you with a quote by a man I greatly admire:
“You’ll realize that countless people have suffered equally or more, with much less support, much less reason to want to get back up, but they do. They get up, they keep going- and so must you.” -Joe Biden
Thank you for your support!
